Join Dr. Mark Schultz, history professor from Lewis University, for a workshop intended to help participants gain a better understanding of the current debate revolving around the proposed use of the 1619 Project versus the 1776 Project to shape curricula in grade schools, high schools, and colleges in the US.  

Dr. Schultz will explain how interpretations of US history have changed over the past 200 years, and how each new interpretation seemed particularly plausible to Americans in that historical context. As we examine the content of the 1619 and 1776 Projects, participants will have an opportunity to separate facts from interpretations, to explore the main interpretations laid out in each Project, and to consider their plausibility.  We hope that participants will leave the workshop with a better self-understanding, a deeper appreciation of their fellow-citizens with whom they disagree, and a greater ability to decide for themselves which interpretation makes the most sense to them.
