Celebrate International Migrants Day 2021 (December 18th) with the Library and Archive of CUNY Dominican Studies Institute (CUNY DSI) of the City University of New York (CUNY) listening to the fascinating story of Juan Rodriguez, considered the first documented non-indigenous inhabitant to live on Manhattan. Rodriguez is also considered the first immigrant, the first person of recent Old World heritage, the first merchant, the first Latinx, and the first Dominican to settle in Manhattan. Juan Rodriguez, a Black free man from the Spanish colony of La Española (Santo Domingo) who arrived in the Hudson Harbor (New York) in 1613 on board a Dutch ship, becoming the first immigrant resident in what is today the city of New York. This webinar will be based on the monograph Stevens-Acevedo, Anthony, Tom Weterings and Leonor Álvarez Francés. Juan Rodriguez and the Beginnings of New York City.
